Here is listed the Bios for most if not all the Spirit beings. Mostly the Shinigami, but there are a few others worth mentioning that aren't Human. If there's someone not here, that you would like to see, simply msg me, Solitude'sRequiem, and I'll write one for them. Or better yet, you can write your own and submit it to me. I'll proofread it, and put it up here giving you credit for the submission! All these Bios were custom written by yours truly, so I'd really like feedback on how good (or bad) a job you think I did. **\\Warning//**
For those of you who only watch the dubbed version, and/or don't read the manga, there could be some major spoilers in here!
[ I wrote COMPLETE bios :) ]
SHINIGAMI Squad 1
| Shigekuni Genreyusai Yamamoto - Captain of Squad 1, as well as the Captain/Commander over all the Squads. Yama's been a Shinigami for a long time, he was the one who opened the Shinigami Academy, and is one of the few original Captains from the group 100 years ago, along with Captains Kyoraku, Ukitake, and Unohana. Mostly a kind old man, he can be feirce and decisive when necessary and displays great strength in combat weilding Ryuujin Jakka, the legendary strongest fire-type Zanpakuto of them all, which is usually hidden within the cane he carries. Yamamoto was the first to accept Captain Komomura despite his appearance, and earned his lifelong trust and friendship. Though he forbids Ichigo to attempt to save Orihime, he only does what he believes is best for all Soul Society, and is the only man who knows the location of the original "King's Key" that Aizen is attempting to construct and that will open the way to the King of Soul Society. |
|
| Chōjirō Sasakibe - Lieutenant of Squad 1, he isn't shown much in the show, his name not being revealed in the manga until long after he was first shown, but is always seen accompanying his Captain. He is always seen wearing a sort of vest and his appearance leans toward that of an Italian, his Zanpakuto, Gonryonmaru, transforms into a rapier when released, matching his style of appearance. He is shown in the manga withough pupils, as though blind, but is shown in the anime to have light brown or yellow eyes. He is part of the team sent to the fake Karakura Town in the Rukongai to confront Aizen. | |
Squad 2 | Soi-Fon - Captain of Squad 2 and Captain of the Punishment and Stealth Forces, Soi Fon is a master of hand-to-hand combat. Her Zanpakuto's Shikai, Suzemebachi which mostly hangs horizontally across the back of her waist like Rangiku's, fits her style perfectly being a dagger-like blade attached to her middle finger. A member of the Fong family, one of the lesser of the noble familys that have had the duty of protecting and serving the Shihoin family for generations, she was originally assigned as Yoruichi Shihoin's, the current princess of the Shihoin family, personal bodyguard, and deeply adored her as a superior in the combat arts. She felt abandoned and betrayed when Yoruichi left without her and was banished from Soul Society for aiding in Urahara's escape, and apparently took over her position as the Captain of Squad 2 and the responsibilities to the Punshishment and Stealth forces also. Since then she has vowed to surpass her former master and prove to Yoruichi that she is stronger. She is a very stern woman who looks down on cowardice, and strictly follows orders to the very end. During the Bount Arc, she arrives in the Human World to aide Yoruichi investigate the Bount. During the Hueco Mundo Arc, she is part of the force of Captains and Lieutenants sent to the fake Karakura Town in the Rukongai to stop Aizen's assault.
| Omaeda Marechiyo - Lieutenant of Squad 2, it seems to be a miracle he's even in this position (probablly the result of his familiy as he is depicted in one of the Manga Omakes to be from a rather prestigeous family). Usually seen stuffing his face with chips or some other junk food, he is a heavy set, cowardly, man who comes from a wealthy family. His mouth is a big as his body, and often comes off as arrogant and uncouth. Matching his size is his Zanpakuto, Gegetsuburi, which takes the form of a spiked ball and chain. He and Soi Fon seem to be at odds and don't care for each other that much. He is part of the team sent to the fake Karakura to confront Aizen. | |
Squad 3 | Gin Ichimaru (former) - The former Captain of Squad 3 who defected with Aizen to Hueco Mundo. Gin is always seen smiling, though if it is genuine is unlikely, as he is a cold, calculating individual who enjoyes teasing people on serious topics. He has been Aizen's subordinate in his evil plot from very early in his career as a Shinigami, when he used to be part of Squad 5. He seems to be a laid back, and easy going person who enjoys talking to people, and runs the "Arrancar Encyclopedia" segment at the end of a number of the original episodes. His Zanpakuto, Shinso, despite it's size extends rapidly like a bullet when released, seeking to impale it's target. Though his eyes are for the most part closed, they are opened in one episode to reveal his iris color to be a dark crimson.
| Izuru Kira - Lieutenant of Squad 3, he is a shy and kind individual who has known Renji and Momo since their time in the Shinigami Academy. He is loyal to his friends and his Captain, perhaps to a fault, as he rushes to defend Gin Ichimaru from a distraught Momo, then turning to raise his Zanpakuto against her, later calling himself a "monster" for doing so. During the "New Captain" arc, he is the first to accept Shusuke Amagai as their new capatin, and strives to get the rest of Squad 3 to do the same, though he is a bit skeptical of the new 3rd seat Kifune. He witnesses a different side to Kifune when they are fighting Hollows in the Seireitei that were mysteriously let out of their holding cells; Kifune seems to see all those who fall prey to attack as worthless and doesn't hesitate to kill them to complete his objective. His skepticism leads him to follow Kifune, where he witnesses him enter the Kasumi-Ouji manor. During Aizen's invasion of the fake Karakura, he, Madarame, Shuhei, and Yumichika are sent to guard the pillars powering the Tankai Kecchuu. When Baragan sends his Fraccion to deal with them, he ends defending his post against the Fraccion Abirama Redder. Though he mostly seems shy, he can be feirce when the chips are down, and doesn't take kindly to those who mention his traitor Captain, Gin Ichimaru. | |
Squad 4
| Retsu Unohana - The Captain of Squad 4 and a master of the Healing Kidou arts, she is a very kind and motherly woman. She examines Aizen's faux corpse, and noticed something amiss, but because of the influence of Aizen's Zanpakuto's, Kyouka Suigetsu, hypnotic spell she could not fully ascertain the truth. Though she was the second to uncover Aizen's betrayal, after Hitsugaya had fallen by Aizen in the Seijou-Tou Kyorin, the residential area for the Central 46. Once discovered, Aizen and Ichimaru fled to Sokyoku Hill, while Unohana stayed to tend to Hitsugaya and Hinamori's wounds. Her Zanpakuto, Minazuki, becomes a giant one-eyed manta-ray that is able to heal people in its stomach when released, though it is unknows whether it is her Shikai or Bankai. During the Hueco Mundo invasion, she appears and heals Chad after he is injured by Nnoitra Jiruga, and also heals the Privaron Espada, Gataibanne Mosqueda, perhaps out of compassion, though she explains that both her and Isane Kotetsu, her Lieutenant, have come only to stop blood not spill it. Though she is mostly kind, she can be stern and decisive when the need arises, and carries the admiration of all her squad. | |
| Isane Kotetsu - The Lieutenant of Squad 4, she is often portayed as shy and is often with Unohana carrying her Zanpakuto for her. She appears to be an expert of Kidou, able to cast the difficult level 58 binding spell, Kakushi Tsuijaku (able to discern another's location by giving them precise geographical longitudinal and latitudinal coordinates from their present location), and the more difficult level 717 binding spell, Tenteikurro (enabling them to establish a mental connection with the desired person or persons and relay a messages, used in emergencies when a Hell Butterfly is not readily availiable). Her Zanpakuto, Itegumo, takes on the form of an open scissor Katar blade, though it's abilities are unknown. She appears not sure of her ability, commending Hantarou for following his heart and aiding Ichigo save Rukia, but saying she was unsure whether or not she would have been strong enough to make the same decision. She accompanies Unohana to Hueco Mundo along with the 3 other Captains, Byakuya, Kenpachi, and Kurutsuchi. | |
| Hanataro Yamada - The 7th seat of Squad 4 and leader of the 14th relief squad, Hanataro knows a thing or two about healing Kidou. Though not much of a fighter, as he is rarely seen with or using his Zanpakuto and is often made fun of for being a coward, he patches up Ichigo and Ganju when they get hurt trying to save Rukia. While Rukia was incarcerated in the Squad 6 barracks, he talked with Rukia often when he was sent to give her her meals and clean up the cell, and from this he learned about Ichigo and formed a friendship with Rukia. He may not look like much, but you never know what he's going to pull out of that pack on his back! During the Bount arc, he is sent by Captain Unohana to investigate the strange occurences there, but ends up getting distracted and working part-time at a convenience store with Ganju. | |
Squad 5 | Souske Aizen - The former Captain of Squad 5, a brilliant man with evil ambitions, and the strength to make them a reality; that is if Ichigo and the Soul Society can stop his evil plot to gain ultimate power and assassinate the King of Soul Society and usurp his throne. To do this he must build his army of Hollows, specifically Arrancar, by using the Hougyoku developed by Kisuke Urahara that he took from Rukia's soul-body, as it had been embedded there by Urahara to protect it. Aizen has been plotting for hundreds of years, since the Vizard were once Shinigami, it was he that transformed them into Hollows, but pinned the blame on Urahara, resulting in Urahara's bannishment to the Human World. Aizen's Zanpakuto, Kyouka Suigetsu, has the ability of "Absolute Hypnosis", it is able to control the five senses of its target, and as he put it "make a fly appear as a dragon, or a marsh a flowerbed". He used this ability to deceive all of Soul Society for over a hundred years and even use Ichigo's invasion to rescue Rukia to his advantage, this being his plan all along. Aizen knew Momo Hinmori adored him, so he used that to his advantage and established her as Lieutenant of his Squad, in order to use her unwavering loyalty to sow confusion and discord among her comrades, namely Hitsugaya and Izuru Kira. Gin and Tousen have been Aizen's subordinates even since Aizen was still the Lieutenant of the 5th Squad under Shinji Hakari, who was suspicious of Aizen's true motives yet always kept him at a distance, since he didn't trust him, which ironically allowed him to be decieved even easier and was eventually Hollowized as part of Aizen's experiment to break the barrier between Shinigami and Hollow. It was Aizen who oversaw the building of "Las Noches", his fortress and Headquarters in Hueco Mundo, and established the Espada and Arrancar using the Hougyoku, though not fully awakened he is able to draw out its full power if he temporarily fuses with it, having the necessary two-fold Reiatsu of a Captain. He is a master manipulator, able to gain another's trust with ease, and bend then to his will while all the while carrying a smile on his face. His Arrancar and Espada all follow him out of fear more than admiration, though it has been seen that some do not follow him readily and have ambitions of their own.
| Momo Hinamori - The Lieutenant of Squad 5, she is a shy girl who deeply adored Captain Aizen while he was her Captain, though this led her to be decieved and disposed of by him when he put his plan into motion. She was classmates with Renji Abarai and Izuru Kira back in their days at the Academy, and carries a bond of friendship with them. She is also a childhood friend of Toshiro Hitsugaya, which causes her confusion, pain, and hysteria when she recieves a decieving letter from Aizen after his "death" naming Hitsugaya as the man behind his "murder". Momo's Zanpakuto's Shikai, Tobiume, widens the blade and gives it prong-like protrusions along its length and enhances and focuses her Kidou, enabling her to fire spheres of her Spirit Energy at opponents. She is also a master of Kidou, as indicated by Hitsugaya. After she recovers from the wounds sustained from Hitsugaya when she attacked him out of Aizens deceit, she follows him to the Central 46, where Gin escorts her to the Seijou-Tou Kyorin, the resedential area for the Central 46, to meet Aizen who impales her with his Zanpakuto to remove get her out of the picture, as he had no furthur use for her. | |
Squad 6 | Byakuya Kuchiki - Captain of Squad 6, as well as the adoptive older brother of Rukia. Head of the Kuchiki clan, the greatest of the noble houses, Byakuya is as arrogant as he is powerful. He is always seen with his Kenseikan, a series of semi-tubes taht clamp to the hair, adorned, symboling his noble Kuchiki blood, as they are only worn by those of high standing. Byakuya is often seen as serene and emotionless, and strictly follows and enforces the rules and laws of the Seireitei as an example to all others of proper conduct, a standar for the Shinigami. He is pompous, and often looks down on those who are not of noble blood. His Zanpakuto, Senbonzakura, disspiates into thousand of tiny blades that he can control when he releases his Shikai. His Bankai grants him more blades to control as well as a few special techniques. During Rukia's rescue he faces off with Ichigo, only to be defeated, and reveals his reasons of wanting to execute Rukia. He later saves Rukia from being killed by Gin under the command of Aizen. He then reveals to Rukia the truth of her real sister, Hisana, his late wife, and the reason why she was adopted into the Kuchiki clan. Byakuya also makes an appearance in the Bount arc to fight Kariya in the woods of the Rukongai, though Ichigo steps in as well. During the Hueco Mundo arc, he and 3 other Captains, Unohana, Kurusuchi, and Kenpachi, show up to help Ichigo save Orihime, and he ends up fighting and defeating the 7th Espada, Zommari Leroux, saving Rukia yet again as Zommari was about to deal her a death blow. |
|
| Renji Abari – The Lieutenant of Squad 6, Renji is a strong individual who is a childhood friend of Rukia’s. When Renji is sent to retrieve Rukia from the human world with his Captain, Rukia’s brother Byakuya, their relationship seems to become strained. Though initially at odds, Ichigo and Renji come to work together to save Rukia from her execution. Renji is a formidable opponent, he's not a lieutenant for nothing, he's also very loyal to Rukia, and wouldn't let her fall without a fight. Renji has set himself a seemingly impossible goal, to surpass Byakuya. This goal has pushed him to train long and hard, eventually to achieve Bankai. His Zanpakuto, Zabimaru, is unique in the way it acts as a sort of bladed whip that Renji can swing and "shoot" in a stabbing motion. His Bankai reveals more of his Zanpakuto's avatar, the snake's tail anyway, as it becomes a massive, skeletal, snake with a Serpents Skull at it's apex which Renji can control and sent to attack his opponents. It is revealed in the anime that he sought out and recieved training from Ikkaku, and tried to persuade him to take on the reigns of a Captain after Aizen and the others left, knowing he possessed Bankai, though Ikkaku declined. During the Bount arc, he is apparantely assigned to protect Karakura town as the local Shinigami, like Rukia used to be. He ends up helping Ichigo and the others solve the problems with the mod-souls and the Bounts. Renji is close to the action in the Arrancar and Hueco Mundo arcs as well, joining Hitsugaya's group to prepare for the invasion of the Human World by Aizen and ends up fighting powerful Arrancar and Espada along the way. While in Hueco Mundo, he ends up being followed by Dondochakks and getting in a battle with the 8th Espada, Szayel Apporo Granz, though the Espada is eventually defeated when Kurutsuchi arrives on the battlefield. Renji's not known for being the brightest crayon in the box, but he's got enough power to compensate for it, and has a sort of rivalry with Ichigo, both trying to out-do each other at almost every turn. | |
Squad 7 | Sajin Komamura - Captain of Squad 7, he is the physically largest Captain, and usually hides his face behind a mask or helmet. He is an old friend of the former Captain of Squad 9, Kaname Tousen, and has known him since before they were both Shinigami. Tousen joined Squad 5, and introduced him to the Lieutenant of the time, Sosuke Aizen, when they met back up in the Seireitei after a few years had passed. The Captain-General Yamamoto was the first to accept him despite his appearance (Kaname couldn't have known his true form being blind), and Sajin has looked up to Yamamoto ever since and is fiercely loyal to him for his kindness. During the Soul Society arc, he and Tousen confront Kenpachi Zaraki, taking their Lieutenants with them when they do, and fight him since they see he has freed the Chad, Orihime, and Uryuu from their cells and is traveling with them in the Seireitei. This is the first time we see both Sajin and Tousen's Bankai. Sajin's Zanpakuto, Tenken, can manifest a large disembodied limb of a large swordsman at will, this being his Shikai release. When he goes Bankai, the whole swordsman appears, about 20 stories tall, that mimicks Sajin's movements. During his fight with Kenpachi, after Tousen falls defeated, his helmet is destroyed and is revealed to bear the form of a fox! The reason as to why he carries this form is a mystery, as there hasn't been any indications revealing it, it's open to speculation and debate presently. Sajin belived he understood Tousen's quest for Justice, but is left confused and enraged when Tousen leaves with Aizen for Hueco Mundo and betrays the Soul Society, and vows to "open Tousen's eyes to the truth", a rather fitting metaphor.
| Iba Tetsuzaemon - A little seen character, he is the Lieutenant of Squad 7 under Captain Komamura. His personality seems point that he belongs in Squad 11, as he enjoys combat and is often seen in duels with Ikkaku Madarame, but ended up in Squad 7. He is an "all-around" fighter, drawing strength from the Kidou, Ho-Ho (Shunpo, or movement arts), and hand-to-hand, and Zanpakuto areas of combat, though he only learned all to get to be a Lieutenant. His Zanpakuto's name is unknown, but it is in the form of a dagger when sealed and is kept inside his Shuhakushou in this form. When released it takes form of a longer, wide, blade with a prong-like protrusion near it's tip. Iba and Ikkaku usually get into sparring matches, but end up sitting down and passing a gourd of sake until it's empty, then fight to see who goes and gets more. He is part of the team sent to the fake Karakura to confront Aizen | |
Squad 8 | Shunsui Kyoraku - Captain of Squad 8, Shunsui has a thing for the ladies. Unfourtunately for him, the usually don't feel the same way. Shunsui's mostly a laid back guy who would rather drink sake than engage in battle, and offers Chad a drink before they inevitablly fight during the Rescue Arc. Though not good at picking up chics, he is very insightful, as revealed by Yamamoto, and possesses a great wisdom, though one would be hard pressed to belive it after seeing him. He and Ukitake go way back, since their days in the Academy, and are good friends. The both were the first Captains that graduated from Yamamoto's Shinigami Academy. Shunsui possesses two Zanpakuto, though they exist as one. When he releases it's Shikai, Katen Kyokotsu, it takes on the form of dual scimitars. Along with Ukitake's Shikai, it's one of the only Zanpakuto that exist in a pair. He is among the Captains sent to the fake Karakura to confront Aizen
| Ise Nanao - The Lieutenant of Squad 8, she can usually be seen carrying around a large book, though what book it is exactly is unknown. She is a strong-willed woman able to put up with and counter Shunsui's futile advances, usually by wacking him over the head. She isn't seen anywhere in the anime with her Zanpakuto, though she is hinted to be a Kidou expert. She is also the vice-president of the Shinigami Woman's Association, and can be quite scary when she wants to, especially when demanding something. | |
Squad 9 | Kaname Tousen - the former Captain of Squad 9, Kaname carries a strict sense of Justice, as well as his blindness. Though this sense of justice seems twisted or misunderstood when it is revealed that he is a subordinate of Souske Aizen, leaves with him to Hueco Mundo. Kaname joined the 13 Court Guard for the sake of his deceased friend, a woman who was very dear to him while he still lived in the Rukongai. She was slain by her husband after she joined the 13 Court Guard, and Kaname took her Zanpakuto, Suzumushi, to weild for her sake. He is the only Shinigami revealed that uses another person's Zanpakuto, and quite effectively. Kaname has been Aizen's Subordinate for over a hundred years, back when he was under Captain Kensei Muguruma of the 9th Squad. Being blind, he was unaffected by Aizen's Zanpakuto, and therefore is not under the hypnotic spell. When Grimmjow returned from the Human World where he took his Fraccion and inevitablly lost them to Hitsugaya's team, it was Tousen who showed up and recalled him back to Hueco Mundo, saying Aizen was furious he acted on his own. Though it seemed Aizen could care less when they returned, Tousen took it upon himself to administer Justice by cutting off Grimmjow's left arm, thereby demoting him out of the Espada.
| Shuhei Hisagi - The Lieutenant of Squad 9, he is not shown in the anime or manga very much. During Renji, Izuru, and Momo's time in the Academy, he was one of the three instructors that oversaw their trainig exercise to the Human World, though it went horribly wrong and Hollows attacked, ending in a rescue by Captain Aizen and his Lieutenant of the time, Gin Ichimaru. It was said that he was already being considered for a seated position at that time, as he possessed uncommong strength in combat. His Zanpakuto's name is unknown, as his fight with Yumichika Ayasegawa was not shown, so his battle techniques and combat prowess is also unknown. Shuhei displays a rather provacative feature on the left side of this face, a tatoo of the number "69". The reason for this odd choice of body art was revealed in the manga, when he was saved as a boy in the Rukongai from a Hollow by the former Captain, now Vizard, of the 9th Squad, Kensei Muguruma, who bore the same tatoo on his upper abdomen. It is implied that Shuhei saw the tatoo and was inspired to become a Shinigami by this experience, perhaps aspiring to become part of Squad 9 because of Kensei. These signs lead one to belive this to be true, though it is open to speculation. During Aizen's invasion of the fake Karakura, he, Madarame, Shuhei, and Yumichika are sent to guard the pillars powering the Tankai Kecchuu. When Baragan sends his Fraccion to deal with them, he ends defending his post against the Fraccion, Findor. | |
Squad 10 | Toshiro Hitsugaya - Captain of Squad 10, Toshiro may look like a kid, but he's very mature for his "age" (even though he's like hundreds of years old). He is a childhood friend of the Lieutenant of Squad 5, Momo Hinamori, and would fight for her sake, and does when she is pulled into Aizen's plot. Toshiro is forceful as well as powerful, and despises it whenever he is looked down on for his stature and frequently asserts his Captain's position and authority, always wishing that he be referred to as "Captain Hitsugaya", especially to Ichigo. Jushiro Ukitake, Captain of Squad 13, apparently thinks Toshiro is still a kid and frequently gives him candy (thinking all children love sweets), much to Toshiro's annoyance. His Zanpakuto, Hyorinmaru, takes the form of a large chinese dragon made of ice when released; it also grands him a sickle like blad attached by a chainr to the botton of the hilt. During the Arrancar arc, he leads a team consisting of Rangiku (his Lieutenant), Renji, Ikkaku, Yumichika, and Rukia, to the Human World to help fortify Karakura Town against Aizen's inevitable invasion. He is also one of the Captains the was sent to the fake Karakura Town in the Rukongai to confront Aizen and the Espada.
| Rangiku Matsumoto - Lieutenant of Squad 10, Rangiku is a fun loving person who enjoys hiding sake bottles in her Captain's, Toshiro Hitugaya, office. Though she may look like your average busty chick, she is serious when it comes down to business, and knows how to follow orders, and has the strength to execute them. During the Soul Society Arcs, she saves Momo from being pierced by Gin's Zanpakuto when he and Toshiro were fighting, and ended up fighting Izuru Kira as well, which is when we first see her release her Zanpakuto. Her Zanpakuto, Haineko, dissolves into ash that she can control when released. During the Bount Arc, she arrives in the Human World, and helps fight the Bount. She is part of the team sent to the fake Karakura Town in the Rukongai to confront Aizen. She and Gin apparently have some history together, Gin saving her from starvation when they were children (still in the Rukongai). | |
Squad 11 | Kenpachi Zaraki - Captain of Squad 11, and bearer of the name "Kenpachi", the title given to the strongest Shinigami, he who enjoys and revels in combat and bloodshed the most. His surname is less of a name and more of a title as well, as Zaraki is the name of the district in the Rukongai where he was originally from before becoming a Shinigami. It is in the Rukongai, namely the Kusajishi district, that he met Yachiru, though she was only an infant at the time. He saved her, unintentinally it seems, from some other violent inhabitants, and gave her her name, Yachiru, the name of the only person Kenpachi cared for. At the same time, he took for himself the name of Kenpachi. Kenpachi is, in many ways, an anomaly; he knows no Kidou, didn't have to pass the entrance exam to become a Shinigami, and doesn't even know the name of his Zanpakuto. Don't let this fool you, he's a crazy, super-powerful, battle hungry, maniac that lives to fight. It is revealed that his Zanpakuto is actually in a premanent released state, due to his inability to seal his massive Spirit energy, though it remains in the form of a simple, extensivelly dented, katana. The eyepatch he wears over his right eye is no ordinary eyepatch. He had the Research and Developement Bureau create it to consume massive amounts of Spirit energy, weakening him so that he could enjoy his fights longer. During the Soul Society Arc, he fights Ichigo, inevitablly resulting in a stalemate, though Kenpachi admits defeat and declares Ichigo the winner before collapsing and losing consciousness; it is because of this that he attempts to call on his Zanpakuto's name for the first time, though to no avail. Kenpachi believes that Zanpakuto are simply weapons, tools for killing, and to rely on their power is to have no faith in one's own ability thereby displaying weakness. During the Hueco Mundo arc, he appears with 3 other Captains, Kurutsuchi, Byakuya, and Unohana, to help Ichigo. He steps in while the 5th Espada's Fraccion, Tesla, is about to deal the killing blow. He quickly dispatches Tesla with a single swing, and then commences the battle with Nnoitra, resulting in his inevitable victory when he employs his Kendo, having been forced to learn it from Yamamoto when he became a Shinigami. |
|
| Yachiru Kusajishi - The Lieutenant of Squad 11, she has known Kenpachi for a long time, and often refers to him as "Ken-chan" or "Kenny". She was rescued from violent inhabitants of the Rukongai by Kenpachi, before they were Shinigami, this is when Kenpachi gave her the name of Yachiru, the name of the only person he cared for. Though it may seem she only got to be a Lieutenant from her relationship with Kenpachi, it is shown several times that she is more than she appears, though she hasn't been seen in combat. She is almost always with Kenpachi, usually riding on his back and giving him bad directions, and almost always has a smile on her face. Once she learned Ichigo's name, she always refers to him as "Ichi" and thanks him after his fight with Kenpachi for letting him have fun fighting him, later saying to Orihime that she has to help Ichigo since he's Kenpachi's new best friend. After the Soul Society Arcs, she really isn't seen again until the Hueco Mundo arc where she arrives with Kenpachi, though doesn't participate in the battle. In the original version, she is the president of the Shinigami Women's Association. Nothing is known about her Zanpakuto, only that the hilt is in the shape of a flower and she usually carries it by the strap, hanging just above the ground. | |
| Ikkaku Madarame - 3rd seat of Squad 11, he loves battle almost as much as his Captain, Kenpachi. Ikkaku and Yumichika go way back, since their time in the Rukongai, before they were Shinigami. At that time they were drifters, roaming the different districts looking for a worth opponent for Ikkaku to fight, it was throug this they first met Kenpachi. He made quick work of Ikkaku, but refused to kill him, saying he didn't hold back and he's lucky he's still alive, telling him to live so he can face him once more in combat. Once they learned Kenpachi became a Captain, they became Shinigami as well, intending to serve in his squad. During the Soul Society Arcs, he's the first Shinigami Ichigo faces, and ultimately gets defeated and warns Ichigo that he will inevitibally fight his Captain, Kenpachi, if he's strong. He also ends up fighting Iba Tensuzaemon when he his Captain, Shuhei, and Tousen find Kenpachi and the others have freed the Chad, Orihime, Ganju, and Uryuu; though they end up just passing the sake bottle around and fighting for fun. His Zanpakuto, Hozukimaru, transforms into a 3-piece halberd/nunjuck connected by a chain when he connects his scabard and the hilt of his Zanpakuto together. During the Arrancar Arc, he is with Hitsugaya's team sent to Karakura Town to re-enforce it agains't Aizen's inevitable invasion. During his battle with the 13th Arrancar, Edrad Liones, he reveals his Bankai, Ryumon Hozukimaru, and defeats him. During the Hueco Mundo Arc, he is stationed to defend one of the pillars of the "Tenkai Kecchuu", so that the Hollows can't destroy it, and warp Karakura City back to the Human World during Aizen's invasion. During Aizen's invasion of the fake Karakura, he, Madarame, Shuhei, and Yumichika are sent to guard the pillars powering the Tankai Kecchuu. When Baragan sends his Fraccion to deal with them, he ends defending his post against the Fraccion, Po. | |
| Yumichika Ayasegawa - The 5th seat of Squad 11, he claims he is 5th seat by choice, wanting rather to be 3rd seat, believing it to be the most beautiful number, but chose the 5th saying it is most in resemblance to 3. Yumichika and Ikkaku are long time friends, since their days in the Rukongai when Ikkaku was a roaming fighter, looking for battles. It is implied that after Ikkaku's defeat at the hands of Kenpachi, he followed Ikkaku into the 13 Court Guard and into Squad 11. He is vain and arrogant, thinking himself beautiful, and looks down on things he doesn't consider as such. During the Soul Society arcs he first faces off with Ganju, who mostly flees from him, dodging his Zanpakuto and insults as well, though he is beaten when he takes a Firework bomb to the face (a fitting defeat). He later engages in battle with the 9th squad Lieutenant, Shuuhei Hisagi, when Kenpachi is discovered having let the Ryoka free. This battle is won by Yumichika, who reluctantly releases his Zanpakuto. His Zanpakuto, Fujji Hujaku, much to his dissapointment, is a Kidou type that drains the Spirit energy from the opponent, it is hinted that this absorbed energy is then used to heal his injuries, but this is never confirmed. He appears in the Bount arc, escorting a member of the Departement of Research and Development, and aids Hanatarou as well. During the Hueco Mundo arc, he is sent to protect the pillars of the Tankai Kecchuu from the Espada, so that the real Karakura doesn't become a battle field. During Aizen's invasion of the fake Karakura, he, Madarame, Shuhei, and Yumichika are sent to guard the pillars powering the Tankai Kecchuu. When Baragan sends his Fraccion to deal with them, he ends defending his post against the Fraccion, Charolette Collhorn, both thinking themselves beautiful and constantly belittling the other. However, he eventually defeats CoolHorn when he releases the true name of his Zanpakuto, Ruriiro Kujaku, and he reveals that "Fuji Kujaku" is a nickname he gave his Zanpakuto, since Wisteria is it's least favorite color. When he calls it thus, he says it sulks and doesn't reveals it's true power, thus enabling Yumichika to hide his Zanpakuto's Kido nature. | |
Squad 12 | Mayuri Kurotsuchi - Captain of Squad 12, as well as the 2nd generation head of the Departement of Research and Development, he is an intelligent individual, cold and calculating, having little or no regard for the lives of others, often using them to furthur his own agenda. He fused his Gikon, artificial soul, and Gigai, artificial body, techniques to create his Lieutenant, Nemu Kurutsuchi, who he regards with the same uncaring, and sometimes cruel, treatement he gives all others. During the Soul Society Arc, he faces off with Uryuu, though originally wanting to go after Orihime after seeing her unique Shielding power once he used his own subordinates as living bombs once they got Uryuu and Orihime to drop their guard. It is revealed that he was the one who bribed the Shinigami surveillancing Uryuu's sensei/grandfather, Souken, to come late after he was attacked by 5 large Hollows, allowing him to be killed and brought to Soul Society for Mayuri to disect and study, though it was the last Quincy he ever studied, having studied 2,661 total. Faced with this sudden knowledge and the man who killed his teacher, Uryuu transforms into the Quincy Final Form and forces Mayuri to impale himself with his Zanpakuto, turning out to be a final option for escape, liquifying his body and rendering him unable to be harmed yet unable to attack while in that state, though he returns to normal after a few days. His Zanpakuto, Ashisogi Jizo, transforms into a crooked trident when released that paralzes the opponents limbs, though unlike a tranqulizer, it leaves intact the pain receptors and nerve endings, allowing pain to be felt to it's fullest extent while immobilized. During the Bount Arc, he battles one of the Bounts that invade Soul Society, Sawatari, and defeats him. During the Hueco Mundo Arc, he arrives with 3 other Captains, Kenpachi, Unohana, and Byakuya, to help Ichigo and the others save Orihime. He drops in on Uryuu and Renji's fight with the 8th Espada, Szayel Apporo Granz, and defeats him with the help of his Lieutenant, Nemu. It is revealed that he was place in the underground prison, Shugo, which was under the command of Kisuke Urahara while he was 3rd seat of Squad 2. He was made the 2nd in command of the newely formed Departement of Research and Development, and took over after Urahara was bannished from Soul Society.

| Nemu Kurotsuchi - Lieutenant of Squad 12, she was artifically created by a fusion of Mayori Kurotsuchi's gikon, artificial soul, and gigai, artificial body, techniques. She is often seen as shy and emotionless, quick to follow her Captain/master's orders, and appologizing frequently when they never meet Mayori's high standards. Though she is often abused and recklessly used by Mayori, she doesn't seem to mind, saying she was relieved when Uryuu spared his life after his battle with Mayori, though that was not his intent. During the Bount arc, she is sent by Mayori to deliver a Quincy artifact held by the Shinigami, that will allow Uryuu to use his Quincy powers again. During the Hueco Mundo arc, she arrives with Mayori to aid in the rescue of Orihime. Though she is possesed and gives "birth" to a replica of the 8th Espada, Szayel Apporo Granz, as part of his technique, that inevitablly leads to his demise as he is injected with a special drug made by Mayori while he was inside Nemu. Though processes unknown, she is revived by Mayori after she is left near death after Szayel's "re-birth". Her Zanpakuto is unknown, or even if she has one being an artificially created soul. Her Shikaushyo is different from the standard, being as it resembles that of a mini skirt apart from the upper section. | |
Squad 13 | Jushiro Ukitake - Captain of Squad 13, he is a wise and kind individual that also possesses great power in combat, as revealed by Yamamoto. Throughout the series, though not during the flash back of 100 years ago, he is seen as sick, at times convulsing and coughing up blood, though his ailment is unknown. He and Shunshi Kyoraku seem to be best friends, since their days in the Academy; they were the first Captains that graduated from Head Captain Yamamoto's Shinigami Academy. He, Kyoraku, Yamamoto, and Unohana are the last remaining Captains from the group 200 years ago. His Zanpakuto, Sogyo No Kotowari, is one of the only Zanpakuto that exists in a pair (his only when released), along with Kyoraku's Katen Kyokotsu, and is depicted as able to control water and lightning in several Bleach games. When Kaien's, Jushiro's Lieutenant, wife was injured by a Hollow called Metestacia during a recon mission (the anime and manga tell the story quite differently), Kaien requests to fight it alone, and Jushiro allows it. This decision was based on his philosophy of battle, that there are two kinds: There are battles to protect others, and battles to protect one's Honor; so being that Kaien's battle with Metastacia was the latter, he let him fight it alone. After the Rescue Rukia arc, he gives Ichigo the Substitute Shinigami badge to carry with him, so he can become a Shinigami quickly. During the Hueco Mundo arc, he is part of the team lead by Yamamoto to confront Aizen in the fake Karakura Town. He is calm and contemplative, often seeking a peaceful resolution to conflicts rather than charging head on into combat, and takes the initiative to research Aizen's activities after he departed for Hueco Mundo. It is in the Great Spirit Library where he discovered Aizen had been researching how to make a new King's Key. His top subordinates, Kiyone and Sentarou, are fanatically loyal to him, and often stalk him wherever he goes to be readily available when he needs them.
| Kaien Shiba - The late Lieutenant of Squad 13, he was a very gifted individual when he joined the 13 Court Guard Squad, bringing honor to the Shiba clan, though he reluctantly accepted his Lieutenant position, saying there were others more deserving. He seemed to have taken Rukia under his wing and taught her how to better wield her Zanpakuto, and treated her like any other squad member when she first joined, despite her noble status. His wife, Miyako the 3rd seat of Squad 13, was attacked and killed by a Hollow, Metestacia, (the anime and manga tell the story quite differently), and Kaien requested and was allowed to fight the Hollow alone to defend both his and his wife's honor, though it ended badly, as he was possessed by Metestacia and was forced to be killed by Rukia. Kaien resembles Ichigo in appearance and personality, both fighting to protect those they care about despite any law; this is mentioned a few times in the series, though the manga reveals it more bluntly. Kaien's Zanpakuto, Nejibana, takes the form of a staff trident, and is able to create and control water. It is later revealed in the Hueco Mundo arc that once Metastacia reformed in Hueco Mundo after his defeat by Rukia, an ability given to him by Aizen being on of his Hollow experiments, he was absorbed by the 9th Espada, Aaroniero Arruruerie, thus giving him Kaien's body and memories, though the Espada is eventually defeated by Rukia when they meet in Hueco Mundo. | |
| Sentaro Kotsubaki and Kiyone Kotetsu - Sentaro and Kiyone share the rank of 3rd seats, though they jointly act as the Lieutanat of the 13th Squad, after Kaien died. However, they both do not seem fit for this role, as they both contantly squabble about everything, but mostly who adores and serves their Captain, Jushiro Ukitake, more. Kiyone is Isane Kotetsu's, Lieutenant of Squad 4, younger sister. | |
| Rukia Kuchiki – A Shinigami sent to Karakura Town to exterminate the Hollows from there. During a hunt for a specific Hollow, she ends up injured and transfering her Shinigami powers to Ichigo. With her Shinigami power gone, she can’t return to the Soul Society and stays until her powers return, teaching Ichigo the finer points of how to be a katana wielding spirit warrior. She is also a member of Squad 13, though her rank is never mentioned, and is Byakuya Kuchiki’s adoptive sister. Apparently the transfer of Shingami powers to a human is a grave offense and she is taken back to the Soul Society to be executed, but ends up being saved by Ichigo and the others, while at the same time having many revelations take place and many truths hidden in the shadows revealed! It is revealed through her dream while in the Senzaikyuu, that she was forced to kill Kaien, her Lieutanant superior, who had been possessed by the Hollow, Metestacia (the anime and manga tell the story quite differently). After her rescue, she visits Kukaku Shiba and appologizes for killing Kaien, having wanted to for a long time but never having the courage to go through with it. To her surprise, Kukaku forgives her, having been told the truth of the even by Jushiro Ukitake, and how much Rukia had suffered over it, so she resolved to forgive Rukia should she ever show up and appologize. During the Bount arc, she arrives in the Human World and aids Ichigo and the others resolve the situation with the Bounts. During the Arrancar arc, she arrives to help Ichigo, but ends up being impaled by Grimmjow's hand. After this and Orihime and Chad's defeat at the hands of Yammy and Ulquiorra, she helps Ichigo get out of his depression of not being able to protect everyone. During the Hueco Mundo arc, she shows up with Renji and helps Ichigo save Orihime, inevitablly getting into a battle with the 9th Espada, Aaroniero Arruruerie, who has taken the form of Kaien Shiba, though she defeats him while suffering critical injuries herself. She can be light-hearted and then serious in the blink of an eye, and seems to love all bunny-related items. | |
Other Spirit Beings and Non-Human Characters
| Kisuke Urahara - Former Captain of Squad 12 and first generation head of Research and Development, Urahara knows many thing about the Soul Society’s inner workings and helps Ichigo get there to save Rukia. He also plays the role of a comic relief element during the show. The cane he carries around is actually his Zanpakuto, Benihime, and the end-cap of the cane has the Soul Reaper seal which allows him to push out souls from bodies or gigais. His cover while in the human world is the owner of a small neighborhood candy store.......that no one comes to, but its just a front, underneath it is a huge training area where he helps Ichigo awaken his own Shinigami power. He also helps Ichigo, Chad, and Uryuu get to Hueco Mundo to attempt to rescue Orihime who was kidnapped by Ulquiorra. Urahara, Tessai, and Yoruichi go way back, to their days in the Seireitei as Shinigami. It was Urahara that developed the Hougyoku, and uncovered Aizen's corruption, though the blame for what happened to the Vizard, their Hollowfication, was pinned on him, and Tessai was punished as well. Yoruichi stepped in at their hearing in front of the Central 46 and rescued both him and Tessai, where they then escaped to the Human World to attempt to reverse the Hollowfication that was placed on Shinji and the others by Aizen. He also coordinated the defense of Karakura town, ordering the Shinigami to make an exact replica of it in the Soul Society, against Aizen's inevitable invasion. | |
| Yoruichi Shihoin - The former Captain of Squad 2, and former General of the Steal and Punishment forces, Yoruichi knows many things about Soul Society, as she is also the former princess of the noble Shihoin Clan. She was asigned Soi Fon as a personal bodyguard while she was still a Shinigami, and was adored by her as a combat superior, though when she left Soul Society, Soi Fon felt abandoned but took up her position as Captain of Squad 2, vowing to surpass Yoruichi. She has known Kisuke Urahara for a long time, being his Captain superior when he was 3rd seat of Squad 2, before their bannishment, and saves both he and Tsubaki from their hearing in front of the Central 46, and helps them escape to the Human World with Shinji and the other Vizard so he can try and reverse their Hollofication process. She mostly takes on the form of a black cat, and deepens her voice to that of a man's in order to conceal her identity. During the Soul Society arcs, she travels with Ichigo and the others to save Rukia, acting as their guide in Soul Society, and eventually revealing her true form to Ichigo, as a young, black, female (albeit a nude one at first). During the Bount arc, she shows up with Soi Fon and helps Urahara, Ichigo, and the others solve the Bount problem. During the Arrancar arc, she shows up with Urahara when Ulquiorra and Yammy's first attack and fends off Yammy, quite violently, though ends up injuring her arm. Yoruichi and Kukaku Shiba appear to be old friends, but how they met remains unknown. Yoruichi's Zanpakuto is a mystery, though she is seen using it only once in a flashback in the anime, she never releases it and is never seen with it at all in the present time-frame. She relys mostly on hand-to-hand combat techniques and the use of Shunpo, being skilled enough to be dubbed "The Goddess of Flash". She can also utilize a tecniqhed called "Shunko" (translated "Flash Release") which is a combination of Kidou and hand-to-hand. |
|
| Ganju Shiba - A member of the Shiba clan, one of the four great noble families of the Soul Society, as well as the brother of Kukaku Shiba, the legendary fireworks master. An outspoken “Shinigami-hater”, he has as large an ego as the boar he rides, and a gang to match. He carries a short, wide blade on his back, but is rarely seen using it, instead he relies on his spell “Sepa” which turns anything he casts it on into sand, and on some special fireworks of his own. He eventually accompanys Ichigo and the others to save Rukia and to act as a guide for their invasion of the Seireitei, as ordered by Kukaku, though he spends most of his time running away from the fight! During the Bount arc he meets up with Hanatarou and works part-time at a convenience store, being of no help to Ichigo and the others. |
|
| Kukaku Shiba - Ganju’s older sister, and a master in the art of fireworks. She is seen in the anime with a wooden arm, although she is depicted with just a stub in the manga. It is unknown whether she was a Shinigami, she does, however, have knowledge of powerful Kidou. She helps Ichigo and the others gain access to the Seireitei by use of her special “Flower Crane Cannon”. She is also the younger sister of the late Lieutenant of Squad 13, Kaien Shiba, and was told what happened the night of his death by Jushiro Ukiatake, then vowing to forgive Rukia if she ever showed up to appologize. Her relationship with Yoruichi is unknown, but they appear to be friends from times past, as she shows up with Jidanbou to help Yoruichi and the others to stop Aizen. | |
| KON – a Modkonpaku, or “Modified Soul”, Mod-Soul for short. When they first meet, Kon’s taking Ichigo’s body for a joy ride after a shipment of soul pills that Rukia orders gets switched w/ a pill containing Kon’s soul(confused? Watch the show). After the ordeal, Ichigo stuff’s Kon, in pill form now, into a stuffed animal. His soul inhabits the body, and is the comic relief element of the show from then on. Kon's a type of Mod-Soul that augments the strength of the legs of the body he inhabits, granting him super speed and a heck of a judo-kick. He deeply adores Rukia, or any specimen of the female gender with large breasts, but ends up getting shut down, or kicked down, at every turn. | |
