Year 7723 Soul Society Calendar (post establishment of the Spiritual Arts Academy), a year which will live in infamy. During this time was set into motion the rebellion of the traitorous former Shinigami, Sousuke Aizen, along with his cohorts Gin Ichimaru and Kaname Tousen. An elaborate scheme devised by this traitor left the Soul Society in a state of perpetual chaos; three of the 13 Court Guard Squads were now without leadership and the very ruling body of the Soul Society, the Central 46, was brutally massacred thus reverting command of the vast number of Shinigami to the Captain Commander, Shigekuni Genreiyusai Yamamoto. Many lives were lost, trust was shattered, and unparalleled damage was extolled on the Shinigami and their base of operations, the Seireitei. However, this was far from the end of the Soul Society’s, and indeed the World of the Living’s, peril. Aizen’s plan was far from reaching its fruition, and the only thing standing in his way of complete destruction and domination is what remains of the 13 Court Guard Squads. Knowing that stopping Aizen’s plot to create the Ouken (The King’s Key) and murdering the King of Soul Society must take top priority, Captain Commander Yamamoto knew as well that the Hollow that plagued the World of the Living would not cease to devour the souls that they as Shinigami are sworn to protect. Born from this difficult situation was the creation of a new assembly of Shinigami with the express purpose and prerogative of protecting the souls of the living while the bulk of the Shinigami’s forces concentrated on fortifying both the Soul Society and Karakura Town, a place of high spirit-enriched land which Aizen requires for his creation of the King’s Key, for the impending invasion of Aizen and his Hollow army. |
This new deployment of the Shinigami was to consist of 13 new squads, each with the same hierarchical command structure of the original Soul Society squads, possessing their own set of 20 officers including a Captain and Lieutenant, as this system has already proven to be effective. This new detachment of Shinigami was to be dubbed:
THE 13 SOUL GUARD SQUADS
Their mission: To protect the World of the Living against the Hollow threat as well as execute any order issued by the Seireitei for the greater good of all souls. This new organization needed both location and base of operations, a home to call their own, to which exiled Shinigami Kisuke Urahara pledged to design in collaboration with Squad 12’s Mayori Kurutsuchi. This new location would take its place in the skies above yet another location of spiritually-enriched ground abovenear a major city in Western Europe. Though not as potent as Karakura Town’s, it could not be overlooked as a possible target for Aizen, not mention the possibility of Karakura being used as a diversion while Aizen secretly constructed the King’s Key there. With this the 13 Soul Guard Squads were given an additional assignment, to watch over this important landmark and defend it at all costs. Through Urahara and the Shinigami’s efforts, the 13 Soul Guard Squad’sGuard’s new base of operations was completed and was appropriately commisioned the Neo Seireitei. Knowing with such a spiritually active area there would be those humans who would posses spiritual awareness, Kisuke also developed a device to cloak this flying fortress from these gifted humans. Utilizing a device called “Orb of the Aegis Mirror”, it was sufficiently hidden from only those of considerably potent Spiritual Energy.
These new Squads would be manned by chosen Shinigami, though the most experienced such as the current Lieutenants and Captains would remain in the Seireitei to deal with Aizen. Knowing that these new faces could not be fully trusted until they had proven their worth, Captain Commander Yamamoto established a collection of Squad Overseers to monitor each squad’s activities and report directly to him. These Overseers aren't just everyday people, they were previous selections for succeeding positions in the Central 46, thus this new assignment would double as training for these 13 individuals to prepare them to pass judgment on all of Soul Society.
With the dye now cast and Aizen’s plan moving towards a confrontation, the 13 Soul Guard Squads stood on the brink of an epic and massive battle themselves. Little did they know of the true value of their new location, as well as its worth to Aizen. As these brave new Shinigami embark on their new mission, it is difficult to say if they will answer the call to arms in full and produce satisfactory results. For the good of all souls in the World of the Living as well as in the Soul Society itself, we can only hope so….
